By Forrest Hanson For Dailymail. The latest film from Big Little Lies star Laura Dern has caused a stir at its Sundance debut, receiving both a standing ovation and audience walkouts. The Tale, written and directed by documentary filmmaker Jennifer Fox, has been called a sort of 'memoir-as-film' and is a fictionalized account of an adult Fox reckoning with how she was taken advantage of by her two athletic trainers when she was 13 years old. Dern, 50, stars as the adult Fox, who goes on a journey of reckoning after her mother, played by Ellen Burstyn, finds a story, the titular 'Tale', she wrote about the relationship.

Her role as the wildly sexual Lula in Wild at Heart marked a distinct change from the more demure Sandy in Blue Velvet. Her first Oscar nomination came in for her leading role as Rose in the film, Rambling Rose. The movie was written by Calder Willingham who adapted the script from his own book of the same name.

‘The Tale’: Sundance’s Most Controversial Sex Scene Is Also Its Most Powerful

Jennifer Fox Laura Dern speaks in voiceover in a half-dazed, half-searching tone, as if slowly bringing herself out of a dream. Dern received raves for her work, getting her first of two straight Independent Spirit Award nominations back when they tried to be more than Oscar predictors ; her next would come with a part that would bring her to greatest and most important collaborator. But Lula is also someone who has experienced great pain—the death of her father, her molestation at the hands of his friend, the murderous rage of her mother played, in a stroke of casting genius, by her real-life mother, Ladd —and has come out the other end demonstrating a full-bodied, defiant belief in the all-conquering power of love. Dern brings a blithe, bouncy exuberance and confidence to the role, waltzing down the street knowing that her walk can turn heads and her smile win hearts.
